Acountability

Our Promise

Our five-year sustainability strategy is reviewed annually and published openly, connecting long-term ambition with near-term action. We report the reality, strengths, gaps, and the work in progress, because transparency builds trust.

This sits alongside Plan Zero, our commitment to circular design and a carbon-neutral trajectory, and an Annual ESG Report (from 2025) that brings together independently verified data across environmental, social and governance performance.

Material Responsibility and Accountability

Material choices carry responsibility. At Boss, materiality is governed through clear standards, independent verification and disciplined decision-making, balancing design excellence with environmental responsibility and human wellbeing. Every material we approve is assessed not only for performance and aesthetics, but for durability, traceability and long-term impact.

Designing for Longevity
We hold ourselves accountable for designing furniture that endures. Longevity is treated as a design obligation, reducing waste and protecting the carbon and craftsmanship invested in every product. By prioritising repairable, refinishable and reupholsterable components, we extend product life and reduce the need for premature replacement.

Healthy Materials and Verified Performance
We commit to creating healthier interior environments through rigorous material controls and independent testing. Many of our products achieve Clean Air GOLD Certification, demonstrating low VOC emissions, and selected products are supported by Declare labels and Red List Free declarations. These measures ensure transparency and confidence for designers and clients, while supporting projects targeting WELL, BREEAM, LEED and SKA requirements.

Responsible and Ethical Supply Chains
Accountability extends beyond our factory walls. We prioritise responsibly sourced and locally manufactured materials wherever possible, including FSC®-certified timber (FSC® Licence number FSC-C021884), recycled metals and renewable-content foams. Boss Design holds FSC® Chain of Custody certification (FSC® Mix 70%) providing assurance of traceability and responsible forest management across eligible timber components. A list of our FSC® Certified products is available upon request.

Our suppliers are assessed against clear environmental and ethical expectations, supported by independent benchmarking through EcoVadis®, and governed by our integrated environmental management system aligned with ISO 14001. This ensures integrity, compliance and continuous improvement across our supply chain.

Measured Impact and Lifecycle Accountability
We believe accountability depends on evidence. Our approach is supported by independently verified carbon measurement through Planet Mark and product-level Lifecycle Carbon Reporting (LCR) developed with Design Conformity. This enables us to understand embodied carbon, material efficiency and lifecycle impacts, while supporting transparent reporting for industry frameworks including BREEAM, LEED, WELL and SKA.

Carbon Targets and Continuous Improvement
Our carbon reduction pathway is aligned with climate science. We are targeting a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030, with a clear trajectory toward net zero by 2050. Boss Design is aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and will be included within Okamura Group’s next formal SBTi submission cycle in 2027, ensuring our targets remain credible, validated and consistent with global best practice.

Through these systems, standards and commitments, accountability at Boss is not defined by intent alone, but by the structures we put in place to measure, verify and improve — ensuring our sustainability claims remain robust, transparent and trusted.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

We recognise the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a global framework for collective progress.

At Boss, these principles guide how we think and act — connecting our work in circular design, responsible sourcing and community impact to the wider global movement for change.

Our alignment with specific goals is detailed within our Sustainable Systems section, which sets out the pillars and partnerships that make this ambition real.

Our Promise

We believe responsibility is an act of design. Every decision we make, from the materials we choose to the way we manufacture, deliver, and renew, carries the potential to shape a better world. Our promises define how we act, create, and evolve.

1. We Design for Longevity

We promise to design products that last structurally, functionally, and emotionally. Durability is our most sustainable feature. Every piece we make is built to perform beautifully for years, not seasons.

2. We Choose Materials with Integrity

We promise to specify materials that are low-impact, safe, and traceable.
Our products are free from harmful chemicals, Clean Air certified, and increasingly made from renewable or recycled content, ensuring they protect both people and planet.

3. We Manufacture Responsibly

We promise to reduce waste, energy use, and carbon emissions across all our operations.
By investing in efficient machinery, local supply chains, and renewable energy, we continually improve the environmental performance of every product we make.

4. We Design for Circularity

We promise to design with the end in mind, creating furniture that can be repaired, reused, and reimagined.
Our Boss Loop and ReNew programs extend product life, reduce waste, and keep craftsmanship in circulation.

5. We Source Locally Wherever Possible

We promise to support regional suppliers and communities.
A localised supply chain shortens transport routes, strengthens accountability, and keeps economic value close to where our products are made.

6. We Support Healthy Interiors

We promise to create environments that enhance well-being.
Through material transparency, low-emission finishes, and ergonomic, acoustically balanced design, we help people work, meet, and rest in spaces that truly feel good.

7. We Take Responsibility for What We Make

We promise to stand behind every product for its entire life.
Our take-back and reupholstery initiatives, delivered through partners like Waste to Wonder, ensure that our furniture continues to serve new purposes rather than end up as waste.

8. We Share and Evolve

We promise to remain open, transparent, and ambitious in our journey.
Each year, we measure, report, and reduce our impact, guided by partners such as Planet Mark, EcoVadis, and Design Conformity, ensuring progress is real and accountable.

9. We Champion People and Purpose

We promise to use design as a positive force, supporting education, employment, and social value wherever we work.
Because sustainability is not just environmental, it’s human.

10. We Design for a Better Tomorrow

We promise to keep improving, rethinking how design, manufacturing, and responsibility can coexist beautifully.
Sustainability is not a target; it’s our craft, evolving with every product we make.
