Inviting

Godfrey Syrett, architects Stride Treglown and Boss Design came together in collaboration to deliver furniture solutions for the new £55 million Business School at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

The brand new, state of the art, seven storey building is the centrepiece of the University’s Frenchay campus. The building currently houses 6000 students and also allows for future growth in student numbers. As well as students, professional organisations have a base in the building, enabling small business owners, barristers, accountants and start up businesses to mix with staff and students.

Quick touchdown areas

In the impressive glass atrium, a Myriad chain is placed at the heart of the welcome area, pieced together in various muted tones, with blue and purple accent colours allowing the furniture to stand out. Myriad offers the perfect solution as a quick touchdown area as well as a place for spontaneous social interactions between students or lecturers.

Myriad chain modules can be mixed, linked and easily moved around, offering infinite possibilities for dynamic spaces.

Encouraging interaction

Throughout the rest of the building, in staff breakout areas, Boss Design’s modular collection, Arthur Cityscape, was chosen to encourage interaction between staff members and also offers a place for lecturers to work quietly away from office spaces.

The configurations chosen mixed both the high and low back options, and depending on the floor level, were chosen in either a deep purple or teal shade. The high back option provides the user with a slightly more intimate and private feel, where the low back option proposes a more relaxed environment, for informal meetings or as a space to take breaks.

Comfort and privacy

To complement the Cityscape configurations, in other areas of the building, the Arthur range was specified in the high and low back options, as both sofas and single seats. Arthur provides a high level of comfort and privacy for the user, perfect for students who are working on a group project or just need a quiet place to work.

Sophisticated aesthetic

In the building’s showcase law courts, three of Boss Design’s high-back executive Mea chairs were chosen for the Judges, offering exceptional comfort during the judging process as well as providing a sophisticated aesthetic, to complement the design of the room. The courts are used by law students to act out scenarios, as well as for real-life cases, enhancing students learning.

Andy Tatton, Sales Director at Boss Design comments, “At Boss we understand that well-designed learning environments can help education establishments succeed and see business grow. Offering students a choice of traditional learning spaces and more contemporary touchdown and breakout areas for study was key to the success of this project.”
