New Designers 2025

A Glimpse Into the Future of Furniture Design

As a senior furniture designer, I recently had the pleasure of visiting New Designers 2025 in London alongside one of our talented interior designers. Together, we explored the latest graduate work from across the UK, and once again, the event reaffirmed its reputation as a vibrant platform for emerging design talent. Each year, the standard of work continues to rise, and this year, we were genuinely inspired by the innovation, craftsmanship, and fresh perspectives on show.

A Proud Moment: Birmingham City University Students

One of the standout moments for me was seeing the work from Birmingham City University. Some of the
students exhibiting had previously completed placements with us, so it was a proud moment to see how
far they’ve come.

Their projects were thoughtful, refined, and beautifully executed. Highlights included:

  • A refined lighting collection featuring elegant shades crafted from sustainable paper, blending eco-conscious design with timeless sophistication. Each piece highlights the natural beauty of the materials while offering a warm, ambient glow.

  • A deeply personal piece: a memorial shelf designed to hold photographs and keepsakes of loved
ones who’ve passed. It was as emotionally resonant as it was well-crafted.

  • The Architect’s Touchdown Chair, a striking blend of sculptural form and functional comfort.

Innovation Across the Board

Beyond BCU, the diversity of ideas and materials was truly exciting. One particularly accomplished piece was an armchair featuring an oak frame, paired with luxuriously soft upholstery. It struck the perfect balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

In contrast, another project embraced a sleek, modern aesthetic: an aluminium stacking stool, powder-
coated in an array of bold colours, functional, fun, and production-ready.

Perhaps the most innovative piece I saw used scanning technology to record the physical imprint of a user, which was then translated into a customised wooden chair moulded specifically to their body.

It was a fascinating intersection of digital fabrication and bespoke design; a glimpse of what furniture might look like in a fully personalised future.

Sustainability and Material Exploration

It was also encouraging to see so many students exploring sustainable materials and processes. From recycled composites to new biobased finishes, the commitment to environmental responsibility was clear. These aren’t just future designers, they’re future change makers.

Looking Ahead

Events like New Designers are a reminder of why I love what I do. Talking with students, learning about their processes and motivations, and seeing where the next generation is heading, it’s both humbling and energising.

The future of furniture design is in good hands. And if New Designers 2025 is anything to go by, it’s going to be a bold, thoughtful, and beautifully made future.
